Trauma Services

The Medical Center of Plano was the first hospital in Collin County and only the third in the entire Dallas-Fort Worth area to earn Level II trauma designation from the Texas Department of State Health Services in March 2011.  In order to receive trauma center verification, a hospital must meet rigorous criteria as defined by the state as well as the American College of Surgeons in the areas of emergency department facilities, operating room services and prompt availability of medical care in numerous specialties, such as trauma surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics and critical care.  Trauma centers are designated as levels 1 through 4 by the American College of Surgeons, with level 1 centers providing the most comprehensive level of care.

Experience

Designation as a Level 2 Trauma Center certifies that The Medical Center of Plano has the resources to deal with severely injured patients on a round-the-clock basis.  To earn this coveted distinction, The Medical Center of Plano had to demonstrate a critical mass of resources, support systems and complex process.  That’s why only a limited number of trauma centers have been designated in the North Texas region.  Studies have shown the more experience the staff has with high-risk surgical situations, the better the patient’s chances are for survival.  The key elements that differentiate The Medical Center of Plano Trauma Center from other facilities throughout the North Texas area include:

Physician Expertise

Trauma Surgeons
A dedicated team of board certified trauma surgeons is on site 24/7.   The immediate availability of a trauma surgeon in the Emergency Department allows TMCP to provide the most immediate and complex care often required by someone suffering from major trauma.  Upon receipt of the pre-hospital report from the first responders, the trauma team is activated and within minutes a skilled team of caregivers awaits the arrival of the trauma patient.  Under the leadership of Matthew Carrick, M.D., Trauma Medical Director, his team is instrumental in improving patient outcomes in the trauma patient.

Anesthesiologists
A dedicated anesthesiologist is on site 24/7 to provide emergent surgical team care in the operating room.  In conjunction with the trauma surgeon, this level of expertise and availability allows expedited operating room care for the most severely injured patients.

Neurosurgeons
Dedicated neurosurgeons are readily available to care for traumatic brain injuries and life threatening neurosurgical emergencies.

Orthopedic Surgeons
Specialized Trauma Orthopedic Surgeons are readily available to care for severe injuries to the musculoskeletal system, such as pelvic fractures and crush injuries.

Critical Care Intensivisits
A dedicated team of physicians provide medical care to the complex intensive care unit patient population.

Other Surgical Specialties
In addition to the key team members, additional highly specialized surgeons are readily available to meet the needs of the uniquely injured trauma patient.  These include:  thoracic and vascular surgeons, Hand surgeons, Oral –Maxillary –Facial (OMFS) surgeons, ENT, OB/GYN, Ophthalmologists, Plastic Surgeons and Urologists.

Specialized Hospital Services

EMS Medical Control
TMCP serves as EMS Medical Control for the cities of Plano and Murphy.  TMCP’s Medical Control is led by EMS Medical Director, Dr. Mark Gamber, and three nurse paramedics.  These individuals working in concert with area ground and air EMS agencies collaborate in bringing skillful care to the most severely injured patients.

Operating Room
The operating room is staffed 24 hours per day to accommodate emergent surgical trauma cases.

Critical Care
The hospital houses 36 critical care beds including a 10 bed neuro-trauma intensive care unit.
