Free Screenings for Skin Cancer

April 18, 2012

Community participants can also be checked for a variety of other cancers

The Medical Center of Plano today invited residents of Collin and surrounding counties to come to the hospital on the final Saturday of this month to take advantage of free screening for skin cancer – including melanoma, the most dangerous form of the disease.

The annual community event is scheduled for Saturday, April 28, from 8 a.m. until noon in the hospital’s atrium. Participants are encouraged to enter through the Emergency Department doors at the north end of the hospital.

As with all cancers, the early detection of skin cancer is a big key to survival and cure. The approach of summer brings increased levels of outdoor activity for many of us, and greater potential exposure to cancer-causing ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

The appearance of new or fast-changing skin lesions should therefore be a concern – especially to those who have a personal or family history of skin cancer, or any of the other factors that indicate an elevated risk.

In addition to being checked for skin cancers such as melanoma, which is projected to claim more than 9,000 lives in the United States this year, participants can undergo screening for cancer of the head, neck, and oral cavity.
